Come and sew at the Southwest Branch and bring your sewing projects. Participants are required to bring their own materials. Machine sewing skills are required.

Come and sew at the Southwest Branch Library and bring your sewing projects. Participants must bring all of the fabric, patterns, thread and notions (e.g. interfacing, zippers, etc.) needed for the project. 

  • Singer Heavy Duty Sewing Machines and tools available for you to use.
  • Prerequisites to use a sewing machine:
    • Sewing: Introduction to the Sewing Machine
      OR
    • Participants must be able to wind a bobbin, thread a sewing machine, sew straight seams, read simple patterns and cut fabric with minimal assistance.

      Note: Machine sewing skills are necessary to be successful in Open Lab. New to sewing? Check out Introduction to the Sewing Machine.

Age requirements: Adults; for anyone from age 13-17, guardian must sign waiver and accompany the child.

About the branch

Southwest Branch opened on March 21, 1989 in a beautiful Mediterranean style building designed by Schweizer and Associates Architecture Firm, who also designed the Orlando Public Library. Serving the Dr. Phillips and Metrowest communities, Southwest is near International Drive and the attractions. Southwest is a popular place for local adults, children, students and tourists.
