West Oaks - Technology Classroom

Sew a cute and functional organizer for your car visor using a variety of sewing skills like installing zippers, elastic, and snaps.

This class is a series, held on Fridays, August 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th. 

  • Class Duration: 2 hours per part, 4 parts in total
  • Age Requirements: Adult, 18 and up.
  • Recommended Prerequisite: Introduction to the Sewing Machine, and any project that has included a zipper 
  • Required Skills: Someone who is comfortable with working and threading sewing machines, sewing patterns with markings and notations, has an understanding of fabric types and interfacing, and has experience with using a variety of tools, notions, and presser feet.

Required Materials: Students will need the following materials to complete the project: (NOTE: Optional hardware can be provided for class, but color assortment will be random, so students are welcome to bring their own to make everything match) 

    • Pattern: DIY Car Visor Organizer: Free Sewing Pattern
    • 1/4 yard (or fat quarter) of cotton fabric for the organizer exterior
    • 1/4 yard (or fat quarter) of cotton fabric for the lining and pockets
    • 1/2 yard of 20” wide fusible interfacing
    • Optional: 6 1/2” x 7” rectangle and a 2” square of see through plastic vinyl (or mesh)
    • Optional: 3 1/2” of sew on hook and loop tape (velcro) that is 3/4” wide
    • Optional: 13” of 1” wide elastic
    • Optional: 1 plastic snap
    • Optional: a 11” long zipper

Level Description
Beginner Someone has used a sewing machine before but may need aid on threading the machine and may need additional practice keeping an even seam allowance.
Confident Beginner Someone who can sew straight and curved seams while keeping a consistent seam allowance, can thread a standard machine and wind a bobbin, has a basic understanding of different fabric types and has completed several projects.
Intermediate Someone who is comfortable with working and threading sewing machines, sewing patterns with markings and notations, has an understanding of fabric types and interfacing, and has experience with using a variety of tools, notions, and presser feet.
Advanced Someone who is comfortable with working and threading both sewing machines and sergers, sewing patterns with markings and notations, has an understanding of both woven and knit fabric types and interfacing, and has experience using a wide variety of tools, notions, and presser feet.

About the branch

West Oaks Branch and Genealogy Center is located in the historic city of Ocoee near the intersection of Silver Star and Clark Roads. The branch opened in August 2001 and was designed by Harvard, Jolly, Clees, Toppe Architecture Firm. West Oaks Branch provides exceptional library services to the nearly 50,000 residents of Ocoee and surrounding areas. In January 2015, the branch became the new Genealogy Center for Orange County, housing a collection of over 30,000 genealogy books. The Library is the official repository of the Florida State Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The construction of West Oaks Branch and Genealogy Center was funded by the Library System and a Florida Library Construction Grant.
