Sewing - Easy Placemats

West Oaks - Technology ClassroomGet ready for your next dinner party with your very own placemats! We will be using straight stitching and turning out techniques with batting.
- Class Duration: 2 hours
- Age Requirements: Adult with completed Sewing Lab Waiver
- Recommended Prerequisite: Introduction to the Sewing Machine
- Required Skills: Someone has used a sewing machine before but may need aid on threading the machine and may need additional practice keeping an even seam allowance.
- Materials Fee: None
- Out of District Fee: $10 (includes class and materials fees)
Required Materials: Students must bring the following materials to complete the project*:
- Recommended Fabrics: Cotton Blends, Cotton Shirting, Cotton Lawn, Challis, Polished Cotton. Designed for medium-weight woven fabrics.
- Fabric 1: 1 yard for top fabric
- Fabric 2: 1 yard for bottom fabric
- Batting: 1 yard low loft (thin) cotton or polyester batting

| Beginner | Someone has used a sewing machine before but may need aid on threading the machine and may need additional practice keeping an even seam allowance. |
| Confident Beginner | Someone who can sew straight and curved seams while keeping a consistent seam allowance, can thread a standard machine and wind a bobbin, has a basic understanding of different fabric types and has completed several projects. |
| Intermediate | Someone who is comfortable with working and threading sewing machines, sewing patterns with markings and notations, has an understanding of fabric types and interfacing, and has experience with using a variety of tools, notions, and presser feet. |
| Advanced | Someone who is comfortable with working and threading both sewing machines and sergers, sewing patterns with markings and notations, has an understanding of both woven and knit fabric types and interfacing, and has experience using a wide variety of tools, notions, and presser feet. |

West Oaks Branch and Genealogy Center is located in the historic city of Ocoee near the intersection of Silver Star and Clark Roads. The branch opened in August 2001 and was designed by Harvard, Jolly, Clees, Toppe Architecture Firm. West Oaks Branch provides exceptional library services to the nearly 50,000 residents of Ocoee and surrounding areas. In January 2015, the branch became the new Genealogy Center for Orange County, housing a collection of over 30,000 genealogy books. The Library is the official repository of the Florida State Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The construction of West Oaks Branch and Genealogy Center was funded by the Library System and a Florida Library Construction Grant.
