Sashiko hand sewing is a Japanese style hand sewing technique using the simple running stitch. Beautiful designs are created when stitches are applied layer by layer and a pattern emerges. Learn step by step how to mark and hand sew to form the geometric design. Suggested pre-requisite: basic hand sewing skills and how to sew the running stitch is required. This month's featured pattern is Flowers and Crosses Hydrangea Variation
Duration: 1 hour on Thursdays September 5, 12, 19, and 26
- Week 1: Begin the pattern
- Week 2: Stitch
- Week 3: Stitch
- Week 4: Finish the pattern
Materials:
- 1- 5" Square Fabric or fat quarter (Solid color, quilting cotton or linen-cotton blend fabric)
- Up to 3 colors of of Sashiko Thread --may be substituted with Pearl Cotton thread Size 8 or Embroidery Thread (separated into 4 strands) in a contrast color from solid color fabric square
- Ruler
- fabric marking pen or marker that is water-soluble or heat-erasable/ Frixion heat erasable marker is highly recommended
- embroidery, crewel, or Sashiko needle
- needle threader
- scissors
- some masking tape or painter's tape (to hold down fabric while tracing)
