Chickasaw - LabLearn to stitch using Sashiko hand sewing techniques. This Japanese hand sewing technique uses the simple running stitch to form geometric patterns.
Learn about Sashiko, the hand sewing is a Japanese style hand sewing technique using the simple running stitch. Beautiful designs are created when stitches are applied layer by layer and a pattern emerges. Learn step by step how to mark and hand sew to form the geometric design. Suggested pre-requisite: basic hand sewing skills.
- Class Duration: 2 hours
- Age Requirements: 18+
- Recommended Prerequisite: Hand Sewing Basics
- Required Skills: Someone who grasps the most basic stitches and can finish simple patterns with aid. Participants must be able to thread a needle, hand sew using the running stitch.
- Materials Fee: None
- Out of District Fee: $10 (includes class and materials fees)
Optional Materials: We provide materials and fabric for class. If you choose to bring your own fabric and notions, the suggested materials are:
- Fabric: 1- 5" Square Fabric or fat quarter (Solid color, quilting cotton or linen-cotton blend fabric)
- Thread: Up to 2 colors of sashiko or embroidery thread in a contrasting color from the fabric. Please note: The following may be used to substitute sashiko thread -- Pearl cotton thread size 8 or embroidery floss (separated into 4 strands)
- Needle: Embroidery, crewel, or sashiko needle
- Ruler
- Fabric marking pen or marker that is water-soluble or heat erasable/2 colors of FriXion heat erasable marker is recommeded.
- Needle threader
- Scissors

Chickasaw Branch is the newest addition to Orange County Library System. It is located in east Orange County on North Chickasaw Trail near the corner of Valencia College Lane. The branch is minutes away from several educational institutions (including elementary and middle schools and Valencia College) making it a popular spot for students of all ages. This library boasts several unique features including a pebble chime, modern architectural awnings and two outdoor decks where the community can relax and enjoy our great Florida weather. Opened on July 18, 2015, Chickasaw Branch was funded by a Florida Library Construction Grant.
