Build knitting skills 1 square at a time! This weekly Knit-A-Long will focus on 2 new stitches per month. Come for one or take them all to create beautiful squares, perfect for a sampler blanket.

This is an open weekly series, designed to help knitters build up knitting skills & techniques. We will work on one stitch for 2 weeks, each week can stand alone, designed for you to make a freestanding block or dishcloth, or combine them all at completion and learn how to stitch your beautiful blocks together into a sampler afghan.

Illusion Knitting: It's not Magic...just fun to create! We'll learn the process of knitting so that the finished piece has a hidden image only viewable from an angle. Simply using knits and purls, the effect is created by alternating rows of two colored yarns so that the raised stitches from one row block out the flat stitches of another row. The finished work looks like a simple striped pattern from the front, but when viewed from an angle, the image appears.  Skills include reading charts.

Class Duration: 1 3/4 hours
Age Requirements: Adult
Required Skills: Someone who grasps the most basic stitches and can finish simple patterns with aid.
Materials Fee: None

*Required Materials: Students must bring the following materials to complete the project*:

  • Yarn:  approx 100 yards of worsted weight yarn in two colors (medium/size 4)
      - Dishcloth: Cotton or cotton blends work best (wool doesn't work well due to moisture absorption)
      - Afghan Square: any medium worsted weight yarn
  • Needles: Size US 8 (5.0 mm) or US 7 (4.5mm)
  • Ring/round stitch markers

Note: Knitting skills including the Knit stitch and the Purl stitch are necessary to be successful in this class.

Level Description
Beginner Someone who grasps the most basic stitches and can finish simple patterns with aid.
Confident Beginner Someone who easily handles standard stitches and can follow simple patterns.

About the branch

Built in 2005, Winter Garden branch sits at the westernmost part of Orange County. This was the last branch opened before the Great Recession of 2008. Interestingly, this is the only branch in the county built on donated land. Two acres were donated by the family of former citrus grove owner, Sylvester C. Battaglia. S.C. Battaglia’s philosophy, as stated by his son, was to “give back to the community.” The branch’s formal name S.C. Battaglia Memorial Branch, honors his contribution.

Winter Garden Branch has all the charm of a small town library plus all of the resources available through Orange County Library System. Noted for friendly and helpful staff, the branch is now serving a third generation of patrons.
